Welcome

Fresh air, healthy exercise and the pride of producing the food on your table - that is what you get when you rent an allotment. A standard plot measures approximately 125 square metres which gives plenty of room to grow-your-own fruit and vegetables. All for just £32.20* per year - 2,500 allotment tenants on 37 allotment sites cannot be wrong!

Allotments are available to all residents of Brighton & Hove. If you would like to apply to join a waiting list for an allotment you can check sites and availability. Then apply online or call (01273) 292929 for an application form.

We have limited mobility allotments at Weald, Foredown and Coldean.

Two new frequently asked questions pages (FAQ) are available, allotment tenants issues- FAQ and inspections, notices & terminations- FAQ. For information on waiting lists and applications please see the online application form.

Rent

1 October 2010 - 30 September 2011: The rent for a standard plot of 125 meters square is £32.20 per annum. The rent for a double plot of 250 meters square is £64.40 per annum. Allotments are exempt from VAT.

Concessions: a 30% concession is available for people over 60 years of age and for those in receipt of income support (25% in 2009/10). If you think you are eligible for a concession please contact us before 1 October.

Rent Increase

In agreement with Brighton & Hove Allotment Federation the annual rent for 2010/11 was increased by 40% to help fund practical improvements to the allotment service. The money raised by this rent increase has been ring-fenced. It will help to partially fund two new members of staff to bring allotment works and maintenance in-house. By doing this we will improve our response times for plot clearances, lock replacement and other common site maintenance issues.

1 October 2011 - 30 September 2012: Allotment rent usually increases by inflation.

How to get more involved

Each site has at least one site representative who helps new and existing tenants. They meet and greet new tenants, carry out site surveys and report any problems with the site. They are also a good source of advice as many have years of gardening experience.

The Brighton & Hove allotment federation is an organisation set up by allotment holders in Brighton & Hove. Each allotment holder automatically becomes a member. The federation promotes allotment gardening and works with the council in the administration of allotments.

Information is also available on composting and green gardening.
