Allotments
Fresh air, healthy exercise and the pride of producing the food on your table - that is what you get when you rent an allotment. A standard plot measures approximately 125 square metres which gives plenty of room to grow-your-own fruit and vegetables. All for just £23 per year - 2,500 allotment tenants on 37 allotment sites cannot be wrong!
Allotments are available to all residents of Brighton & Hove. If you would like to apply to join a waiting list for an allotment you can check sites and availability, then apply online or call 01273 292929 for an application form.
If you are an inexperienced gardener you could consider renting a smaller learner plot or share the work with a friend or relative. Allotment holders can register "co-workers" on their plot by completing and the CoWorker Agreement Form [PDF 43KB]. Information is also available on composting and green gardening.
Alternatively you could get involved with a community food project which have regular work days and open days listed in our Events Diary (search by keyword "allotment"):
- Brighton & Hove Organic Gardening Group at Weald allotments
- Whitehawk Community Food Project at Whitehawk allotments
- Moulsecoomb Forest Garden at Moulsecoomb Place allotments
- Care Co-ops Community Farm at Stanmer Park
- Clearview community allotment at Lower Roedale
- Consider joining a garden share scheme in the city organised by Grow Your Neighbour's Own
- Try gardening workdays with Fork & Dig It at Stanmer Organics. Workdays are on Tuesdays and Sundays. The harvest is shared if available. Contact Yvonne on 07880 870217.
We have limited mobility allotments at Weald, Foredown and Coldean.
How to get more involved
Each site has at least one site representative who helps new and existing tenants. They meet and greet new tenants, carry out site surveys and report any problems with the site. They are also a good source of advice as many have many years of gardening experience.
The Brighton & Hove Allotment Federation is an organisation set up by allotment holders in Brighton & Hove and each allotment holder automatically becomes a member. The Federation is set up to promote allotment gardening and work with the council in the administration of allotments.
The Brighton & Hove Food Partnership works for better food for our city – now and in the future. Food that is healthy, affordable, accessible and kinder to the environment. Particularly more food produced locally, for people living locally.
