Brighton & Hove Curry Chef of the Year competition

Local chefs will be cooking up a storm in a competition to find the best curry chef in Brighton & Hove.

Cooks from restaurants and takeaways in the city will be taking part in the event on Thursday August 5.

The competition is being organised by Brighton & Hove City Council's food safety team as part of its ongoing work with local catering businesses.

Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, Brighton & Hove City Council's cabinet member for environment, said: "The competition is designed to get across the importance of good food hygiene and health eating in a fun and different way.

"It is also about highlighting the choice of places we have in the city producing great food, from takeaways to restaurants."

The chefs will be preparing and cooking their curries in the training kitchens at City College in Brighton. A panel of judges including food writer Andrew Kay and a member of the Sussex cricket squad, will then mark the dishes, taking into account everything from flavour and aroma to nutritional content and culinary skills.

The council runs a popular Scores on the Doors scheme which lists food hygiene ratings for all food outlets in the city on the council's website www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/scoresonthedoors  Indian and Thai restaurants and takeaways with three or more 'stars' on the Scores on the Doors ratings scheme were invited to take part in the event, and checks have been carried out on their food safety and hygiene measures in the run-up to the competition.

Chefs competing the in the event will be from River Spice in Preston Street; Rasa Brighton in Little East Street; Krua Anne in Kensington Gardens; Khan’s of Kemp Town in St George’s Road; Goa Spice of Life in Lustrells Vale and Memories Of India at Brighton Marina.
