Communities come together for Pride

Community events are a cornerstone of the Pride Festival in Brighton & Hove. This year is no exception and the Women’s Performance Tent and Calabash Performance Tent in Preston Park illustrate the popularity of a strong focus on diversity and community involvement in Pride on 7 August.

Brighton & Hove City Council and Brighton Pride have each donated £3,000 to make sure the Women's Performance Tent went ahead this year, following  intervention by the council’s leader Mary Mears.

Councillor Mears said: “The council is delighted to be supporting a range of community activities at Pride this year with small grants. We are proud to be contributing to the Festival which has become a flagship event in the city’s cultural calendar.”

The Women’s Performance Tent, produced by Brighton Women’s Centre volunteers and staff and supported by local organisations, provides a platform for women performers from the LGBT communities, a safe space and volunteering activities for women of all ages, backgrounds and cultures.

This year’s event showcases a vibrant range of locally and nationally-known performers from 2-7pm. Hear samples of their music and view the programme

For the past 10 years a committed team of Brighton Women's Centre volunteers have produced a successful women’s performance space at Brighton Pride on Preston Park. The tent has grown from a small gazebo with no stage, a tiny sound system and a handful of onlookers to a large tent with a 6k sound system and a capacity crowd all afternoon.

The Calabash tent, which celebrates cultural diversity within the LGBT community, has gone from strength to strength since it started back in 2003. The city council donated £2,400 so that it could continue this year.

Raising the profile of the Black and Minority Ethnic groups within the gay community is one of the most important objectives of Calabash.

Affy Wajid, Calabash co-ordinator, said: “It’s about being inclusive, not exclusive. The Calabash tent promotes the fact that the gay community in Brighton & Hove consists of people from all ethnic backgrounds – not just white Europeans.”

The tent has a spectacular and eclectic line-up of DJ acts and live music, including R’n’B, hip hop, old school ragga, drum ’n’ bass, bollywood, funk, soul and disco. For more information contact Affy at affywajid@hotmail.co.uk.
