Recycle your aerosols

Residents across Brighton & Hove will be able to recycle household aerosol cans from Monday (August 2).

Brighton & Hove City Council is introducing aerosol recycling as part of ongoing work to cut waste and increase recycling in the city.

Aerosols can now be recycled anywhere that other cans are collected by the council in the city.

For example, residents receiving a black box recycling collection service can now put household aerosols in the box, along with other materials such as cans, paper, cardboard and plastic bottles.

People in flats with a recycling collection point can deposit aerosols for collection along with other cans.

They can also be taken to 75 community recycling points across the city, from Portslade to Saltdean.

Aluminium and steel used in aerosol containers, such as deodorants, air fresheners and furniture polish, can be recycled for a range of different uses, including new cans, car parts, washing machines and even window frames.

Aerosols should be empty before they are put out for recycling, and should not be pierced or crushed. The lid should be removed first.

Note to editors: Figures from the British Aerosol Manufacturer's Association suggest UK households use around 27 aerosols a year
