Healthy living - celebrating 23 top projects in east Brighton
A celebration of the success of more than 20 projects that have helped hundreds of people across east Brighton lead healthier, safer, happier lives is being held at The Crew Club in Coolham Drive in Whitehawk on Thursday 24 September.
The event has been organised by the East Brighton Healthy Living Centre – a joint project between Brighton & Hove City Council and the local NHS that delivers health promotion and one to one support for residents in areas such as substance misuse, mental health, sexual health, carers support, physical activity and cookery and healthy eating.
The projects have all been funded through the centre’s Healthy Neighbourhood Fund, which has been running for the past two years. This offers up to £350 to local voluntary and community groups for a health related projects or activities, with funding from the local NHS via the Novas Scarman Group.
The 23 projects include:
- Woodingdean Youth Centre’s My Bus project
- Whitehawk Primary School’s basket ball and cooking sessions
- Moulsecoomb Primary School’s women’s cookery group
- The Carers Centre – Time 4 Me days
- Coldean Colts
- Moulsecoomb Mad Hatters lunch club
- St. George’s Fruit & Veggie co-op – Moulsecoomb
- The Bangladeshi Women’s group activity sessions
- Substance Misuse post treatment support group
- A lunch club at the council’s Robert Lodge flats in Whitehawk
- Albion in the Community Kickz project.
The event, which starts at 10am, will bring representatives of the projects together to hear from speakers from the Woodingdean Youth Centre, Whitehawk Primary School, the East Brighton Substance Misuse Project and others, and then to network over locally produced organic lunch.
Cabinet member for environment Councillor Geoffrey Theobald said: “This really is what I call value for money – it’s remarkable how far relatively small sums of money can go when you can harness the energies of groups who want to help themselves and others.”
The Healthy Living Centre is based in the Moulsecoomb children’s centre in Hodshrove Lane. For further information about the centre and the projects it supports please call Helen Graham on 01273 294531.
