Council launches insulation grants for families
A scheme that offers grants to improve the energy efficiency of homes and help residents save money is to be extended to include families with children under 16.
It is estimated that the new Family Insulation Grant could benefit around 3,500 families. It will initially be available to private residents with young families living in homes with one or two bedrooms. Subject to funding, the council will also extend the scheme to a wider range of households in the future.
Councillor Maria Caulfield, Brighton & Hove’s cabinet member for housing, said: “Many families with young children are facing rising fuel bills, as well as mortgage or rent payments and have little disposable income.
“Brighton & Hove has been very successful in bidding for government funding which means we can now offer grants to families most in need, providing free insulation and helping them save money on energy.
“This scheme will be in addition to our wider programme of providing financial assistance to vulnerable householders in the private sector so that they can carry out improvements and repairs.”
Cavity wall and loft insulation grants have a considerable effect on reducing CO2 emissions, as well as lowering fuel bills and improving comfort, at relatively little cost.
The new scheme, operated in partnership with Climate Energy, is part of a local grants programme of more than £1 million a year.
Brighton & Hove’s Warm-Homes initiative currently offers free insulation for residents receiving benefits and those aged 70 and over and 50% discounts for many others.
The new Family Insulation Grant will be available to owner-occupiers, leaseholders and private tenants with one or more children aged under 16 living in homes with two bedrooms or less. Private householders who do not qualify for the new grant may still be eligible for discounted loft or cavity wall insulation, typically at a cost of only £189.
