The Agreed Syllabus
The Brighton and Hove Agreed Syllabus (AS) was revised in 2005. It is a legal requirement for all community schools to teach RE in accordance with this syllabus. Copies of the AS have been sent to every school. Additional paper copies of the syllabus are available from the Clerk to SACRE, Carolyn Bristow. A small charge may be made for this. Alternatively, The Agreed Syllabus is online on Brighton and Hove Education online.
A Possible Scheme of Work for Foundation Stage, Key Stage1 and Key Stage 2
A group of primary teachers from local schools has devised and written this scheme of work which will deliver the AS. They have used original materials, the QCA units and resources from other LAs and Dioceses. This scheme of work contains units of work from the major world faiths in the AS and ideas that local schools have found effective. It is by no means compulsory and schools should feel free to use as little or as much as they find helpful.
SACRE have not met to agree the units yet and so they are provisional. However, SACRE have said we may star using them. We would welcome any feedback or suggested improvements to the scheme. Please contact Hilary Ferries, Primary Strategy Manager on (01273) 293738 with any feedback. For work on secondary RE, please contact Carole Sullivan on (01273) 294240.

School units
One sixth of the RE curriculum can be units that are relevant to the school. Several schools visit the Buddhist Centre and Claire Ashenden, RE consultant, has worked with them to create this scheme of unit that could be used by schools.
Christmas and Easter
We recommend that schools do a short unit each year on Christmas and Easter that takes a different look at the festivals. There are some excellent ideas on the Cumbria Grid for Learning website: Christmas and Easter Units (Cumbria)
Additional resources
Steve Myall from Downs View School has written some units for his school that include practical and exciting ideas. He has kindly agreed to put them on this site for teachers to use.
