Child Protection

Brighton & Hove's Local Safeguarding Children Board

The Children Act 2004 requires every local authority to establish a Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB). The role of the LSCB is to:

  • coordinate what is done by each person or body represented on the Board for the purposes of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in the area of the authority
  • ensure the effectiveness of what is done by each such person or body for that purpose

The Government's Statutory Guidance, Working Together to Safeguard Children (2006) defines safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children as:

  • protecting children from maltreatment
  • preventing impairment of children's health or development

Brighton & Hove's LSCB has an independent chair, Alan Bedford, and has senior representatives from statutory and voluntary sector agencies.

New pan-Sussex Child Protection and Safeguarding Procedures have been introduced. The procedures are used across Sussex and were drawn up by a working group made up of representatives from West and East Sussex and Brighton & Hove, using feedback from practioners.

The procedures are available here http://www.proceduresonline.com/brightonscb/

To obtain LSCB reports, please telephone (01273) 295055. The executive summary of a recent serious case review is now available.
