Sustainability

What is sustainability?

“Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”

This is the most broadly accepted definition of environmental sustainability, included in the report of the Brundtland Commission “Our Common Future”  to the United Nations General Assembly in 1987.

Action on sustainability involves ensuring well-being and quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come, by meeting social and environmental as well as economic needs.  It involves always considering our global impact before carrying out any action: "Think Global, Act Local".

Sutainability in the City

Mary Mears, Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, includes a Sustainable City and a Sustainable Economy in her top ten priorities for the next year - 10 for 2010 - practical measures designed to create a more prosperous city for us all.

Sustainability in the Council

The council's Environmental Policy Statement summarises the key objectives and commitments to environmental sustainability across the council.  The council has implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS) for its Venues and Events; in August 2010 we became the first Local Authority in the UK to achieve EMS accreditation to both ISO14001 and BS8901 standards.

Sustainability covers all areas of the council's work and the information on these pages has been grouped from pages on our own site and other websites.

A full list of the Sustainability pages can be accessed using the tabs at the right hand side of your screen.
