Working towards an equal city
Equalities and Inclusion
Brighton & Hove City Council is committed to Equal Opportunities in employment and service delivery. It seeks to ensure equality for all, combating all forms of discrimination on the basis of race, colour, ethnic or national origins, religion and belief, gender, sexual orientation or marital status and disability or age.
This applies to recruitment, training, pay, and conditions of service for employees, design and delivery of service for customers, and strategic planning and policy formation. The council will be active in ensuring it complies with the requirements of national legislation and standards, and seek to influence partners and contractors to meet their obligations through agreement and contractual arrangements it enters into.
Information about Equality and Discrimination can be found on the Equality and Human Rights Commission website.
Equalities and Inclusion Policy
The council has now produced a new Equalities and Inclusion Policy which encompass all of the equality schemes as previously produced by the council (please see useful links below), into one equality scheme action plan.
The purpose of the policy is to guide the council's approaches to equality, diversity and inclusion. The policy builds on the city's shared experiences and lessons learnt over the last four years and outlines our achievements and plans in going forward for the period 2008 until 2011.
This policy will provide guidance for our officers, partners and contractors and underlines our responsibilities and duties and how we are going to meet them. We will apply the policy by ensuring consistency with other leading strategic documents, alining our performance measures to ensure positive equalities and inclusion outcomes across all of our services that we deliver. We will be measuring the impact of the Equality and Inclusion policy and related policies through a programme of equality impact assessments and regular performance reporting.
The Equality Standard for Local Government
The council's progress in delivering Equality of Opportunity is assessed against the Equality Standard. The current assessment is that Brighton & Hove City Council is working towards Level Three of the standard. At this level an authority must demonstrate that it is effectively setting equality objectives and targets, delivering information systems and monitoring systems that will allow it to assess its progress in achieving these targets. For further information, please see our equality standards page.
Staff groups
- Black and Minority Ethnic Workers Forum
- Disabled Workers Forum
-
Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Workers Forum
We support and encourage staff to join these groups which enable individuals to share experiences, raise awareness on the effects of discrimination, have a collective voice with the council in terms of best practice, ie policy, procedures and service delivery, and provide networking and information sharing opportunities.
