Rural Broadband Improvements - State Aid Consultation open

Brighton & Hove City Council is working in partnership with East Sussex County Council on their plan to improve rural broadband speeds in East Sussex.  Some of the improvements will upgrade existing slow connection speeds in parts of Brighton & Hove’s rural fringe which are not being served commercially.  This is separate from the recently announced funding for ultrafast broadband for the centre of Brighton & Hove.  East Sussex County Council is required by the European Commission to demonstrate there is no current, or planned (within the next three years) deployment of either basic or superfast broadband by the private sector in any areas where we might be intervening and so are now running a state aid consultation to consult on our understanding of the market provision and plans.  A link to the consultation page can be found here:

Whilst this consultation is focused on service providers, the project team are always keen to hear from residents and businesses about broadband provision in East Sussex and Brighton & Hove’s rural fringe.  The more demand from individuals and businesses we can show, the more companies will be interested in carrying out this work and investing in East Sussex and Brighton & Hove.  The page linked to above includes a further link to a page where businesses and consumers can register their interest in wanting fast internet speeds.

Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB) in Brighton & Hove - our Super Connected Cities bid:

We are delighted to present Brighton & Hove’s submission under round two of the Super Connected Cities Programme. Ever since the opening of the first round of bids, Brighton & Hove has sought to secure new investment in its digital infrastructure.

This investment to complete the city’s ultrafast broadband network and roll out wireless provision across the city will add very real value to our important and growing Creative, Digital and IT sector. This is why we were so glad that a second round has been opened and we have been invited to bid.

To see the submission made to the DCMS please see the link below -

The Brighton & Hove round 2 Super Connected Cities bid

Please note -

The original bid, as submitted to the Department for Culture Media & Sport was based on, and included within it, commercially sensitive data from communications companies provided under non-disclosure agreements.

This version is for public information and has therefore had the commercially sensitive data removed. This has included removing some of the mapping that was used to support the case. Detailed appendices have also been removed to make the document more user friendly.
