Cycling
Brighton & Hove have been selected as a national exemplar Cycling Town from 2009 to 2011. This builds on the success of our Cycling Demonstration Town status from 2005 to 2008. The council is dedicated to promoting healthy and environmentally friendly travel like cycling. Cycle lanes are provided across the city, including along the seafront, Grand Avenue and The Drive and Lewes Road and there are many bike parking facilities sited conveniently throughout the city.
Cycle freeways
A new north south cycle freeway has been completed and provides a link between the Downs, from the Dyke Railway Trail in Hangleton to the seafront via Hove station. The southern section along Grand Avenue and The Drive is a segregated, motor-vehicle free, European-style cycle freeway.
Plans to extend seafront cycle lane – tell us what you think
Brighton & Hove City Council is proposing to extend the seafront cycle route (NCN2) from Brighton Pier to the Marina. The proposed route - filling a 'missing link' in the seafront cycleway - will run for two kilometres along Madeira Drive.
The council would like to hear people's views on the proposal.
Residents and traders along the proposed route have been consulted and questionnaires were also available at a consultation event, at Brighton Town Hall held between 8th and 10th January 2009.
Currently around 2,000 cyclists a day use the city's existing seafront cycle route, which runs from Brighton Pier to Hove Lagoon to get to work, travel across the city, and for pleasure. The new stretch will mean that in future cyclists can continue on to and from the Marina and, from there, link in with the cycle route along the A259 between Roedean and Saltdean.
The project will be jointly funded by the city council and by Cycling England as a result of the city's status as a Cycling Town.
Following feedback from consultation, a final decision on the scheme will be made at a forthcoming Cabinet Member meeting. If the scheme gets the go ahead, work will start this year.
Further information is available and if you would like to comment please complete this survey. The closing date of the consultation is Monday 19th January 2009.
