Brighton & Hove owns about 6,000 hectares (14,000 acres) of countryside around the city - most of the land from Saltdean to Ditchling Beacon and around Hove towards Southwick Hill.

Cityparks works to protect and enhance these countryside sites. We seek to promote a greater understanding and enjoyment of the countryside through guided walks and other events, trail guides, talks, our annual Springwatch celebrations and on site information.

Stanmer Park is one of the main gateways to the downs, as well as the largest area of open access land, and woodland, in the city.

We work closely with local community groups, helping them manage green sites of particular importance to them. We provide advice and support from helping to write management plans to providing sustainably produced materials from our woodlands to implement them.

We try to ensure that all chalk grassland (downland) is being properly managed to preserve the many rare species that rely on it.

We are also responsible for Rights of Way and access land in the countryside.

In all of our work we seek to strike a balance between the needs of wildlife, archaeology and public enjoyment.
