The Family Information Service (FIS)

FIS logo

The Family Information Service (FIS) (formerly the Children's Information Service) is a free, impartial service giving detailed information and advice on childcare as well as general information on a wide range of services for children and young people aged 0-19 years and their families in the city. We pride ourselves on offering good customer service and in May 2007 were awarded the Charter Mark standard for this.

Our information

The information on offer from FIS includes: childcare, early education, things to do, family support, information and advice on working in childcare....and more!

The FIS team

Children's Infromation Team with their Charter Mark

We are a friendly team consisting of a part-time Strategic Manager, an officer who oversees things on a day-to-day basis and four FIS Advisors. We have also recently been joined by a Childcare Recruitment Officer and Advisor.

We have a wide variety of backgrounds including nursery practitioners, childminding and teaching. Some of us are parents too, helping us to understand and empathise with you!

Our outreach service

As well as offering our city centre services at Brighton Town Hall, we go out and about around the city - find out about our outreach service here.

Our consultation with parents

In 2006 we spoke to many parents and carers about their information needs when choosing childcare - our consultation findings have been used to help us improve the information and advice we offer. Our new Childcare Choices booklet [PDF 890kb] was developed from these findings and is available now by clicking on the link above or contacting the FIS team.

Our Job Vacancy Service

A popular service with local childcare providers and jobseekers alike which collates details of all known childcare related vacancies in the city.

Our partners

FIS partners include a wide range of organisations both locally and nationally

Monitoring childcare needs

We are working with colleagues in the CEYC to ensure that the supply of childcare in the city meets the needs of local people. Find out more about our childcare monitoring work.

Service developments

Our service has developed greatly since its launch in 2000 - find out about how we're doing and some of our plans for the future
