Financial assessment

Once you’ve had a needs assessment for your care and support needs, we will carry out a financial assessment.

The financial assessment is how we decide if we can help you pay for your care and support and how much our financial contribution will be.

You can choose not to have a financial assessment, but you’ll then have to pay the full cost for your care and support services.

How it works

We look at your financial situation, including:

  • your regular income, such as pensions, benefits or earnings
  • your capital, such as cash savings and investments, land and property (including overseas property), and business assets

When we have the information to calculate your financial assessment, we'll let you know if you're eligible for financial help.

If we don’t have the information and your care service has already started, we’ll usually expect you to pay the full cost yourself. We’ll backdate any financial help you may be eligible for from the start date of your care service once we have your financial information.

What you pay

The amount you pay depends on your income, savings and expenditure and whether you own any property. It also depends on the kind of care and support service you need. Find out more about charges for services:

You can use the care calculator below to work out your estimated care costs.

The average cost shown for a care home with nursing services includes an amount payable by the health authority towards nursing costs. To find out more about help with nursing care contributions you can contact the Money Advice Service.
