Public Art: Rest Awhile On Your Journey

Rest Awhile on Your Journey

'Rest Awhile On Your Journey' is a unique, bright orange, wave shaped bench that was designed and manufactured by Brighton based designers 'Millimetre'.  It is situated on Ashton Rise hillside in the Tarner area, east of the Old Steine.  The bench is made from water-jet cut plywood and steel and these are held in place through compression. Its design is an exciting visual addition to the area as well as being a functional piece of public furniture.

The bench is in memory of Paul Kooker who was the Vice Chair of the Tarner Area Partnership which is a development group specifically dedicated to the needs of the Tarner area. The community commissioned the work in conjunction with Brighton & Hove Arts Commission as a memorial to Paul and funds were raised from the National Lottery to pay for the work. The bench was developed over several weeks in conjunction with important feed-back from Tarner residents. The resulting design is fun, practical and durable and is a perfect place to stop and have a rest before continuing further up the steep hill in to Tarner. For more information on design projects by Millimetre go to www.millimetre.uk.net.
