'Pay to stay' information

Our latest information is that the government has made the 'Pay to Stay' policy voluntary for local authorities.

Brighton & Hove City Council's position is that we have no plans to pursue the policy at present, and tenants can assume that things will remain as they are. If this changes in the future, we will let tenants know.

The Pay to Stay government ruling in May 2016 proposed rent increases for households in council tenancies with incomes of over £31,000 a year. The proposal was for 15p a year for every pound over £31,000. For example, if a tenant earns £20,000 and their partner earns £21,000, their total earnings would be £41,000 and they would be asked to pay an additional £1,500 in rent each year.
