Paying your rent
Your rent is a weekly charge for the property (or garage or car parking space) you occupy. You may also need to pay additional charges for any extra services you receive. These might include:
- communal heating
- sheltered housing service charges
- cleaning of communal areas, for example in blocks of flats
- CareLink Plus Alarm Service
If you live in a block with communal heating or cleaning, charges are divided among all residents of the block and the proportion is added to your rent account.
We take rent collection very seriously because if rent is not paid then there will be less money to pay for things like repairs. If you do not pay your rent you could end up with a County Court Judgement against you and ultimately be evicted from your home. This would make it difficult for you to get credit or to be housed by the council in the future.
When is rent due?
Your rent is due on a Monday in advance and must be paid in the week it becomes due. Most tenants pay their rent weekly but it may be more convenient for you to pay fortnightly or monthly. If you do wish to pay at longer intervals payments must be made in advance. To discuss this, please contact the Housing Income Management Team.
It is vital for the council to collect the rent due every week in order to maintain and improve services to tenants. If you are late paying your rent you are in breach of your tenancy agreement and could lose your home or garage/car parking space.
Changes to your rent
The amount of rent you pay is reviewed at the beginning of the year, following strict government guidelines. Any change in your rent will start in April and we will advise you at least four weeks before your rent is going to change.
