Health promotion training
Brighton & Hove City Council offer health promotion training. These courses support you and your organisation to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to improve the health of people living in your area.
The courses are suitable for anyone working in:
- primary and community health
- social care
- mental health
- police and criminal justice
- voluntary organisations that support these service areas

How to apply
If you would like to attend any of the courses please complete a training application [PDF 102KB] and return by email to email@example.com or by post to the address on the bottom of the form.
We try to allocate places to a variety of services to give you an opportunity to meet people in various health care roles. All applications are shortlisted approximately six weeks prior to the course and we will let you know whether you have been given a place at this stage.
Courses are currently free to staff who work in Brighton and Hove within one or more of the following areas:
- Health Services
- Higher Education (colleges, sixth forms, universities)
- Community,and Voluntary Sector
- Brighton & Hove City Council
A fee of £50 is levied against any places that are lost due to non-attendance. If you are given a place but are unable to attend we require at least five working days' notice so that we can allocate the place elsewhere. Substitution of a colleague at late notice is acceptable.
Staff who work in the Private Sector or outside of Brighton & Hove are also welcome to apply but there is a cost involved:
- Half day (£60)
- Full day (£120)
- 2 days (£240)
Resources relevant to these courses (books, journals, health promotion leaflets, DVDs, models and posters) are available from Library Services at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals Trust. Other services provided include literature searching, current awareness and information skills training.

Making every contact count
Making Every Contact Count is a long-term strategy that aims to help us create a healthier population by putting the prevention of health problems at the heart of every interaction between health and social care employees and patients/service users. The framework encourages frontline staff to offer brief but appropriate advice, including ‘signposting’ services, as part of their everyday contacts.
The Prevention and Lifestyle Behaviour Change Competence Framework has been developed and tested by NHS Yorkshire and the Humber over the past two years. It describes the generic competencies required by staff to enable them to promote healthier lifestyle choices in areas such as long-term conditions, obesity management, smoking cessation and alcohol abuse.
