Community waste forum

If you, a group, or your community are interested in developing new ways to re-use unwanted items, reduce waste, recycle or compost more, we want to hear from you!

The city-wide Community Waste Forum (CWF) will be an opportunity for organisations and individuals across the city to:

  • get to know more about waste management in Brighton & Hove
  • think together about activities that might help reduce waste in their areas
  • explore ways to work with Cityclean (the council’s in-house recycling and refuse service).

If you have ideas of a new scheme in your blocks of flats or want to set up a community composting scheme, this will be the place to come and develop them.

At the beginning, staff at the University of Brighton chaired the Community Waste Forums at Brighton Town Hall. They were neutral members and have a great deal of experience in waste management. They helped support the council and representatives from the community and voluntary sector in setting up the forum.  The forum is now facilitated by a representative from the council's communities & equality team and administrated by Cityclean.

What projects are running so far?

Project name Progress
Community composting (North Laine) Two schemes launched in August 2011 (St. Peter's Church and Brighthelm). Both running successfully and being monitored by community compost monitors before expansion considered. Review to be carried out: July 2012.
City-wide community composting Community composting schemes created along with guidelines, risk assessment, agreements and composting monitors. If you are interested in setting up your own community composting scheme, contact Brighton & Hove Food Partnership for guidance.
Communal recycling Consultation for a communal recycling trial in the city centre has finished and a trial began in April 2012.
Rewards for good recycling A bid was made to Defra for funding to develop a reward & recognition scheme.  Unfortunately, this bid was unsuccessful.  The council is currently considering how it can develop incentive schemes for good recycling.
Cityclean in the community Cityclean and partners attended several events over Summer & Autumn 2011 to find out what sort of information and advice community groups would like at their events.  Business case completed in September 2012, with Cityclean senior management to make a decision about how the council can support community events to be as sustainable as possible.
Managing agents, estate agents and council tax The main focus of this project was to improve communications for new residents, particularly students, in the city.  It has led to ongoing partnership work with the city's universities and managing agents to promote recycling and reuse services every time a new tenancy begins.
Promote existing reuse & recycling initiatives and developing new opportunities for re-use (such as Swish clothes swaps & duvets/pots/pans for students moving out of halls of residents etc) There are lots of great ways to reduce your waste in Brighton & Hove but not enough people know about them. Find out more about re-use.  The council's waste contracts & projects team are currently looking at how these re-use projects can be resourced.
WEEE recycling points Recycling points for small electrical items have been introduced on trial in the city.
