To make an application for help with your rent and council tax, you can use our online benefit claim calculator to find out how much help you could get. Please note this is an application purely for housing benefit and council tax reduction, any other benefits will need to be applied for separately. You can find a government calculator for these other benefits at the Gov.uk website.

The online calculator and claim form has two parts. The first part will indicate if you are eligible for help. The second part will allow you to make an application. Please ensure you answer the questions accurately about your household circumstances.

Saving a claim calculation halfway and finishing later on

When using the online calculator, you can save what you have done so far and come back to the same point later on. Your calculation will be saved for 12 weeks. To use this option, when you want to stop and save your answers, follow the ‘Come back later’ guidance which is towards the bottom of every screen as you work your way through the questions.  You’ll be asked to choose a password and you’ll be given a reference number.

Please note down your reference number and remember your password as you will need both to return to where you left off.

Make a new claim for help with rent and council tax

  2. You can now send us your supporting documents via email. You can do this by scanning them in at home and then attaching them to an email. You can then email us at housing.benefits@brighton-hove.gov.uk with the attachment. Please remember to include the following details in your email otherwise we will not know who it belongs to;
  • Claim reference (if known)
  • Full name and address
  • Date of birth
  • National insurance number

If you have recently received a letter asking for evidence to verify your change you can also email us with it rather than sending it or bringing it in. Please note we do not accept passports electronically.

Tell us about a change of circumstances

You can now let us know about your change of circumstances online

You can also send us your supporting documents via email. You can do this by scanning them in at home and then attaching them to an email.
