What is social media?

Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, and Flickr

‘Social media‘ is the term to describe websites and online tools which allow people to interact with each other – by sharing information, opinions, knowledge and interests. Social media involves the building of communities or networks, encouraging participation and engagement.

You can see a list of all the council's social media services on our social media sites page.

Why does the council use social media?

By using social media the council has an online presence. We can reach more people in the city and join in online discussions.

What is Twitter?
Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay in contact through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to a simple question: What's happening?
Twitter is free to use, and you can sign up to the service very easily by creating an account on the Twitter website. Once signed up, you can 'follow' our Twitter feed and receive news and web updates.

What is Facebook?

The council has its own Facebook page. Sign up and like our page! Facebook is a free-access social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. You can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people.
