Ward name changes
Brighton & Hove City Council recently carried out a consultation exercise to seek residents’ views on whether ward names should be changed, in the current Patcham Ward and Stanford Ward.
Proposals have been put forward to change Patcham Ward to Patcham and Hollingbury Ward, and to change Stanford Ward to Hove Park Ward.
Residents in the affected wards were asked whether they supported or objected to the proposed name changes. The deadline for responses was 25 October 2009.
Background to this consultation
A resolution to change a ward name must be passed by a majority of at least two thirds of councillors voting at a specially convened council meeting, likely to be held on 10 December 2009. Section 59 of the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 provides a power under which the local authority may decide whether or not to change the names of wards within it’s area. It specifies the steps that must be taken in order to change the name, one of which is to take all reasonable steps to consult with the affected residents.
