The Mayor of Brighton & Hove

Councillor Brian Fitch Mayor of Brighton & Hove with Mayoress Norah FitchThe current Mayor of Brighton & Hove is Councillor Brian Fitch. He was elected by the other councillors at the Annual Council Meeting on 15 May 2014. His term of office is for one year until the next Annual Council Meeting in May 2015. The Mayor will be supported during his mayoral year by his wife Norah.

The Mayor is the first citizen of Brighton & Hove and therefore undertakes an important ceremonial role both in and outside the city. However, this role is different from some mayors and lord mayors such as the Mayor of London because the mayor of Brighton & Hove is not directly elected by the people and therefore holds no direct power.

The mayor is politically neutral in carrying out all of his mayoral duties.

The Deputy Mayor for 2014-2015 is Councillor Denise Cobb. She was elected by the other councillors at the Annual Council Meeting on 15 May 2014.  Her term of office is for one year until the next Annual Council Meeting in May 2015.

What does the Mayor do and what are his or her responsibilities?

  • represents the council at public, civic and ceremonial events both in and outside the city and welcomes important visitors and dignitaries.
  • works actively with a wide range of local organisations and promotes the city of Brighton & Hove both at home and abroad

  • religious events of all denominations
  • supporting local charities and community groups

  • visiting schools, day centres, hospitals and care homes
  • opening fairs and fetes
  • speaking at dinners and receptions
