The council's Economic Development Team offers a range of support services to businesses, such as information and contacts relating to starting a business and access to finance for business. Listed below is a selection of services that the team and partner organisations provide. If you require further information or assistance with the services on offer please contact the team on:

Grants and Support Programmes for business from the Regional Growth Fund and Coast to Capital

New initiatives to help businesses with access to finance and business support to start, grow or expand a business are now available to businesses in the Brighton & Hove and Coast to Capital areas www.coast2capital.org.uk 

Business grants of between £5,000 up to £250,000 are on offer to businesses wishing to grow, and are available to fund projects that lead to employment growth.

Business Growth Grant Clinics

Two clinics to help businesses understand how they can benefit from new funding, in Worthing (21 July) and Haywards Heath (28 July) and further clinics are planned for Brighton & Hove, Lewes District and West Sussex, dependant on interest.

Business Growth Grants are available to any business in the Coast to Capital region who want to increase turnover and profits, but need additional finance. Grants are available from £5,000 to £250,000 and it is expected that the grant will form no more than 25% of the total costs of the growth plans. New Funding Escalator from the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership

Finance South East are managing a new business support fund being delivered through the Coast to Capital LEP, and available to businesses in the Coast to Capital area.

Loans of up to £200,000 and equity investments of up to £125,000 are available to eligible companies in order to support marketing and sales team development, operational scaling up and new product or service enhancement.

New 'green growth' grants for SME businesses

Ngage Solutions have recently announced two new grant schemes which support energy conservation. Both grants are open to SMEs, employing less than 250 employees, based in the South East of England

Low Carbon Workspaces

This match funded grant, worth up to £5,000, is aimed at SMEs who own or rent their premises on a long lease. It will finance energy efficiency solutions to reduce energy consumption, bills and carbon emissions. Support is available for the installation of measures, such as:

  • Double glazing
  • Roof & cavity wall installation
  • Energy efficient boilers
  • Solar blinds & shutters

You must have an energy bill of more than £3,000, either own your property or have had a lease for at least 18 months and be responsible for purchasing energy in part or all of your building.

Grants for Eco Innovation

Grants of up to £3,000 are available to help businesses who already have an environmentally friendly product or service and need help getting it to market. Support is available for activities such as:

  • Marketing
  • Brand creation
  • Web development
  • Advertising, Social Media and PR

You must have either a prototype developed and tested or an existing product or service that reduces environmental impact and is market ready. For more information contact the team:

Free business start-up course

The Let's Do Business Group offer a free day-course to help you plan for starting a business. This takes place approximately once a month in Brighton & Hove.

Find local business support

The council, in partnership with the Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce, has set up an online service for businesses seeking support, advice and finance. It links through to all the key business networks and support organisations that are based in and around the city.
